Left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd leads Guyana off the field

Rain was being friendly to Leeward Islands who were on the back foot from day one, but a magical spell of left-arm spin bowling from Windies Youth player Ashmead Nedd ensured defending champions Guyana started the 2018 Cricket West Indies’ Regional Under-19 Three-day tournament with 10-wicket victory on Sunday in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Leeward Islands resumed at Arnos Vale on 22-0 and looked intent on bettering their first innings performance of 116, as openers Mikyle Louis (31) and Jelani Manners (16) added 52 when Nedd made his first of six in-roads by knocking over Louis.

Wickets then fell in clumps with the next best score being 26 by Elroy Francis and they were bowled out for 114 in 59.4 overs –  two runs less than their first innings total.

Nedd ended with 6-30 in 20 overs, while Kelvin Umroa (2-20) and Kevin Sinclair (2-31) were the other wicket takers.

It meant Guyana only needed four for victory which came off the bat of Alex Algoo in the first over. Guyana will now play Trinidad and Tobago in their second match, starting on August 7 at Sion Hill Playing Field.

Elsewhere, Barbados and Jamaica played to a draw in their match at Sion Hill. Scores: Barbados 223 and 129/3 declare; Jamaica 140 and 138/6.

Trinidad and Tobago and the Windwards played to a draw at Park Hill.  Windward Islands 238 all out; Trinidad and Tobago 304-8.
