Amarnauth Chand admitted to killing his son, Mahesh Chand

High Court Judge Justice Navindra Singh on Tuesday sentenced a 49-year-old grass-cutter to 14 years imprisonment for killing his son with a cutlass.

Amarnauth Chand had pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter and admitted that on September 29, 2016, he unlawfully killed his son, Mahesh Chand, 24, at Annandale, East Coast Demerara.

State Prosecutor Abigail Gibbs told the court that on the day in question, Amarnauth and his wife were arguing over $300 when Mahesh intervened.

The elder Chand became annoyed, armed himself with a cutlass and chopped the young man to the chest.

Mahesh was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he succumbed to his injuries.

In Court, the father expressed remorse for his action.

“I am sorry for what happened between me and my son. It hurts that I have lost my son and had to apart from my rest of children,” the man told the Court.

He said he has accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was advised by Justice Singh to attend anger management classes while in prison.

His lawyer, Keoma Griffith had asked the court to consider the fact that the killing was not premeditated and that it was a “spontaneous act.”
