Fire guts unoccupied army base in Essequibo

Police are investigating the cause of a fire which partly destroyed the unoccupied Army Base located at Maria’s Lodge, Essequibo Coast.

The News Room understands that the fire started between 3 a.m and 3:30 a.m Tuesday.

The wooden building, suspended on concrete posts, is located on the eastern side of Maria’s Lodge in an unfenced yard.

Residents observed the fire and smoke emanating from the top flat of the wooden building and formed a bucket brigade; they managed to control the spread of the fire before the Guyana Fire Service arrived at the scene.

It was observed that the floor along with the walls on the northern and southern side of the building were semi burnt.

The building does not have any electricity.
