The government will be seeking to boost Guyana’s sea and river defence capabilities through a $5.1 billion injection from the 2021 National Budget, according to Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh.

The vulnerability of Guyana’s sea defence has been particularly detrimental to farmers along the coastland, where breaches in the sea defence have harmed crops and livestock.

The focus will be directed towards fortifying sea defense at several areas including Dantzig, Prospect, Zeelugt, Cane Garden and Bygeval.

The minister also highlighted that emphasis will be placed on boosting natural interventions such as mangrove to protect Guyana’s seashore.
