Man found guilty of raping 12-Y-0 girl twice

Gavin Assanah was on Monday last found guilty by a 12-member jury of raping a 12-year-old girl twice.
Assanah was indicted on the two charges before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Sexual Offenders Court at the High Court.
He was accused of raping the same girl during the month of August 2014, and again on January 26, 2015.
A 12-member mixed jury, after deliberating for over two hours, found him guilty of the two charges.
The judge ordered that a psychiatric evaluation be conducted on Assanah, since she observed that he was smiling throughout his trial, although given the seriousness of the offences.
Sentencing was deferred until October 24 following the hearing of the probation and psychiatric reports.
Assanah was represented by Euclin Gomes while the state was represented by prosecutors Cicelia Corbin, Caressa Henry, and Paneeta Persaud.
