The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) has never controlled Guyana’s capital city Georgetown, but the party’s General Secretary, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, asked residents to support his party and give it a chance to fix their long standing issues.

“We’re focusing on developing communities right across Guyana and every time we’ve been in office, our country has moved forward.

“… but we’ve never had a chance to run Georgetown,” Jagdeo told a large crowd outside of Freedom House (the PPP’s Headquarters) on Monday.

Since Guyana gained independence in 1966, the People’s National Congress and later, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have controlled the Georgetown City Council, though PPP councillors have been elected to the council.

Now, however, Jagdeo told the residents that the PPP will fix many of the long standing issues Georgetown has faced if the PPP candidates are elected.

“We are saying to the residents of Georgetown, give us a chance here because for too long you’ve heard APNU’s propaganda and they’ve done practically nothing to fix the city.

“We want a team in there, your team, the team that we have chosen that will focus on helping the residents of this city,” the party’s General Secretary said.

Importantly, the PPP is seeking the support of Georgetown residents with several new faces, including former APNU Mayor Patricia Chase- Green.

Chase- Green, offering brief comments on Monday after submitting the PPP/C Georgetown list of candidates, said she is focused on progress, unity and peace for Georgetown.

Former city councillor and independent candidate Malcolm Ferreira has also joined the PPP/C in hopes of pushing the development of his community of Albouystown.

Prominent businesspersons have also publicly shown their support for the PPP/C but that support has been criticised.

To this end, President Irfaan Ali told supporters gathered at Freedom House that the party is the only party that is a national one. And he told them not to be discouraged by naysayers.
