Though faced with challenges, Guyana plays a vital role in the Caribbean and has the potential to serve as the “anchor” of the region.

And with several initiatives already in place to address critical issues such as food security, climate change, juvenile justice and agriculture, the United States Agency for International Development Eastern and Southern Caribbean Mission (USAID/ESC) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat has promised its continued support and investment towards ensuring a prosperous future for all.

The commitment was made on Wednesday evening as officials from both missions gathered at the Marriott Hotel to celebrate and highlight the long-standing partnership.

The event was held under the theme “Neighbors, Partners, Friends: Spotlight on Guyana.”

In her remarks, U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot said the partnership underscores the shared commitment towards fostering positive change.

“USAID’s commitment to Guyana is a testament to the enduring bonds between our nations and the deep-rooted desire to strengthen the well-being of the people of this region,” the Ambassador said.

She noted that efforts in the various areas of common interests are making a “tangible” difference in the lives of citizens.

“As we move forward, we remain dedicated to our shared vision of a safer, more secure, and prosperous Guyana. Together we can overcome challenges and build a brighter future for all of our citizens, neighbours, partners and friends,” Ambassador Theriot said.

Meanwhile, according to CARICOM Secretary General, Dr Carla Barnett, Guyana continues to play a vital role in reducing the region’s food import bill and ensuring food and nutrition security.

“CARICOM looks forward to furthering and deepening the discussions on our common interest within the framework of the PACC 2030 (Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis) to address the climate crisis…ensuring food security and local capacity for climate adaptation and resilience and of course deepening collaboration on all crucial consideration of the region,” Dr Barnett said.

As she acknowledged the progress resulting from the partnership, the Secretary General said, “Let us continue as good neighbours, partners and friends to nurture our stated commitment and work together to forge a more secure and prosperous future for all our citizens”.

Meanwhile, Regional Representative, Eastern and Southern Caribbean, of the USAID, Mervyn Farroe said that Guyana plays a vital role in the economic and social fabric of the Caribbean region.

“…Guyana’s potential to serve as an anchor in the region is exceptional…CARICOM continues to be a steadfast and valued partner with USAID in promoting development, stability and resilience in the Caribbean region,” Farroe said.

He noted that USAID and CARICOM are committed partners in the development of Guyana and the Caribbean.
