Section of Corriverton Market destroyed by fire

Firefighters are still at the scene of the Corriverton Market in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) where a large section of the facility was destroyed by a fire on Monday night.
Vendors from different sections of the market were seen scrambling to gather their goods in the event the fire spreads further.

At one point there were confrontations with the Police who were hastily trying to remove everyone from the area, including vendors who were trying to save their goods. The situation became hostile and the Police formed a blockade with tables to prevent anyone from entering, including the firefighters.

The Mayor of Corriverton Imran Amin in a brief statement to the media noted that he was informed that the blaze started at approximately 18:30 hrs and upon his arrival, he noticed a grocery stall on fire. The firefighters were immediately summoned to scene.
According to a vendor, most of the grocery section was damaged by the blaze.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
