Alex Amsterdam, a 29-year-old security guard from De Kinderen, and Terry Thorman, a 23-year-old mini bus conductor from LMeten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara have been remanded to prison following their court appearance on Friday on two counts of murder.

They are accused of killing Arvinda Roopram, 25, and Mohammed Nazir, 30, outside a nightclub in Leonora on September 21.

The men were brought before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were read to them.

Neither Amsterdam nor Thorman was required to enter a plea, and they will remain in custody until their next court date on October 11, 2024.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred during a scuffle between the victims shortly after midnight outside the nightclub.

According to police reports, both Roopram, a construction worker, and Nazir, a carpenter from Stewartville, were involved in an altercation when the violence escalated.

Thorman turned himself in to police on September 23, claiming innocence despite the allegations against him.

He surrendered around 18:50 hrs, stating, “I have nothing to do with the death of those two men.” He declined to provide a written statement during his interrogation and was subsequently arrested.

Police have indicated that Amsterdam was apprehended at the scene after sustaining a stab wound to his upper abdomen. He is currently under police guard at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he receives treatment.
