Pedestrian, 47, dies in early morning accident at Cornelia Ida

Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred early Sunday morning in Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, resulting in the death of a 47-year-old pedestrian. The incident took place at approximately 12:10 a.m. on November 10, 2024.
The accident involved motorcar #PAG 7971, which was owned and driven by 33-year-old Raschad Adal, a resident of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
The pedestrian, identified as Sherwin Decunaj, 47, of Lot 83 Back Street, Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara, was struck and sustained fatal injuries.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was speeding eastbound on the northern lane when Decunaj, who had been standing on the southern footpath, suddenly ran across the road from south to north into the vehicle’s path. The impact caused Decunaj to fall onto the roadway.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene, and the pedestrian was transported to Leonora Cottage Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead. The body was later transferred to Ezekiel Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver revealed no presence of alcohol in his system. The vehicle has been impounded for further inspection by licensing and certifying officers.
Raschad Adal is currently in police custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
