Relocation plan for displaced vendors under consideration by City Council

A relocation plan previously submitted for the displaced vendors who operated in the vicinity of Yhip’s Bakery in the Bourda Market area in Georgetown is now being considered by the Mayor and City Council.
The decision to review the plan to place the vendors at Merriman’s Mall was confirmed on Monday during a special council meeting to address the situation.
On Sunday, the vending stalls of several vendors were dismantled by the City Council, in keeping with a court order granted by the High Court, barring vending activity on the bakery’s property at the corner of Robb and Alexander Streets.
Georgetown Mayor Alfred Mentore initially said he didn’t recall the plan; however, upon being reminded by councillors, he said the plan will be re-assessed with the intention of “adding the variation part” to accommodate more vendors.
For now, the immediate response is to consider the existing plan.
“The council will make the decision by Monday about the process forward,” Mentore said.
The existing relocation plan includes a design and cost to execute the work, which includes building a shed.
On Monday, People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) City Councillor Alfonso De Armas said the relocation plan was recommended since February 2025.
Mentore suggested that a plan similar to it be designed to accommodate more vendors operating at Alexander Street and the surrounding areas.
“We are looking at that [the plan] with the intention of adding the variation part, but I would’ve loved for us to have the whole place properly done and properly shed,” he said.
City Engineer Colvern Venture highlighted that there is a plan to construct an area nearby with washroom facilities; that area, he said, would allow the vendors will be able to use if placed at Merriman’s Mall.
In the interim, the Mayor has highlighted that a letter has been sent to the High Court, and he is expected to go to court on Thursday to seek additional time for the vendors.
