Dead is Dinesh Persaud, 32, of Bath, West Coast Berbice

A patient who suffered a fractured skull after he was beaten by other patients at the National Psychiatric Hospital earlier this week has died.

Dead is Dinesh Persaud, 32, of Bath, West Coast Berbice.  He was on Monday last admitted to the institution which caters for mentally ill patients and was beaten sometime between Tuesday morning and Wednesday.

His father, Davindra Persaud, 58, said his son, is not a permanent patient at the National Psychiatric Hospital.

As is usual, Dinesh’s mother had earlier taken him to see a psychiatrist at her home-based clinic on Monday. The psychiatrist would usually give out medication at the clinic and Dinesh would return home. But in this case, the doctor referred him to the hospital for him to be admitted.

Dinesh’s father visited him on Tuesday and said he gave him food and chatted with him.

On Wednesday, Mr Persaud said he got a call from a social worker from the Psychiatric Hospital informing him that his son was moved to the New Amsterdam Hospital.

Mr Persaud said he went to the hospital and searched for their son in the wards but could not find him. Eventually, he said a doctor told him that his son was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital “with no heartbeat.”

“He probably died at the Psychiatric Hospital but dem only bring him over there (New Amsterdam Hospital) to show he dead there…so they kill he over there, they beat he over there.”

The father revealed that a post mortem examination showed that his son died from a fractured skull and that he had marks of violence about his body.

Mr Persaud said the Police has not told him anything about the incident and that the administrator of the National Psychiatric Hospital, visited him Thursday night and said the matter was with the Police.

Dr. Rajkumar, the administrator of the National Psychiatric Hospital, declined to comment on the matter.

An official has confirmed that the Ministry of Health is investigating the case.

Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus could only say that “Police received a report of the incident.”
